Multidimensional Computerized Adaptive Testing Based on Bayesian Theory

چکیده

Effective and efficient assessment of a learner’s proficiency has always been a high priority for intelligent e-Learning environments. The fields of psychometrics and Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) provide a strong theoretical and practical basis for performing skills assessment, of which Item Response Theory (IRT) is the best recognized approach. For assessing multiple skills at once, which is called for in e-learning environments because they rely on fine-grained skill models to know the knowledge state of learners and provide them appropriate study path, multidimensional IRT (MIRT) is a necessity and emerged as a candidate. However, MIRT is computationally expensive. A simpler multidimensional model, based on classical Bayesian theory, is proposed. It is an extension of Rudner’s work on unidimensional Bayesian decision theory. The explanation of theory basis is based on binary classification (master/non-master) test. Its evaluation is performed through simulations with pseudo-random data samples comprised of 6 skill dimensions. We firstly show that the model can take advantage of multidimensional test items to accelerate assessment and that it performs better than the unidimensional version. Secondly, we compare its classification accuracy rate with its unidimensional version and MIRT approach. The results show that its performance is much better than existing unidimensional model, and at least as good as MIRT, in spite of the fact that its complexity and computational burden is lighter than MIRT. Index Terms – Assessment, e-Learning, Bayesian theory, computerized adaptive testing (CAT), multidimensional, item response theory (IRT).

Bayesian Network Approach to Computerized Adaptive Testing

For the personalized learning, a good testing method, which can effectively estimate a learner’s proficiency, is required. In this paper, we propose a novel testing method, Bayesian network-based approach to Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). Our novel approach can estimate proficiency of the examinee effectively and efficiently because it reflects complicated relationships between all items ...

A Multidimensional Computerized Adaptive Testing System for Enhancing the Chinese as Second Language Proficiency Test

The study aims to construct a multidimensional computerized adaptive testing (MCAT) system for enhancing the Chinese as second language (CSL) proficiency test. Because currently the major CSL proficiency tests still retain paper-pencil (P&P) test method for testing. Nowadays more advances computer technology is available, project development on the computerized based test (CBT) has been gradual...

Probabilistic Models for Computerized Adaptive Testing

In this paper we follow our previous research in the area of Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT). We present three different methods for CAT. One of them, the item response theory, is a well established method, while the other two, Bayesian and neural networks, are new in the area of educational testing. In the first part of this paper, we present the concept of CAT and its advantages and disad...

Probabilistic Models for Computerized Adaptive Testing: Experiments

This paper follows previous research we have already performed in the area of Bayesian networks models for CAT. We present models using Item Response Theory (IRT standard CAT method), Bayesian networks, and neural networks. We conducted simulated CAT tests on empirical data. Results of these tests are presented for each model separately and compared.

Computerized Adaptive Testing With Item Cloning

To increase the number of items available for adaptive testing and reduce the cost of item writing, the use of techniques of item cloning has been proposed. An important consequence of item cloning is possible variability between the item parameters. To deal with this variability, a multilevel item response (IRT) model is presented which allows for differences between the distributions of item ...
